Our project unfolded in two phases: the initial launch occurred in May 2022, followed by an update in June 2023. We strategically timed both launches before the summer season, anticipating a surge in user activity. The latter brought visual and filter updates, support for larger schools, enhanced roles management, and AI-powered automated grading. This led to the creation of FLYER for School.

Challenges

Challenges

  • Parents and teachers struggled with a single, time-consuming option for tracking student progress: logging into each student’s account.

  • Many teachers lack tech-savviness, making it difficult for them to use the complex tools proposed by other LMS platforms.

  • Our in-house team was preoccupied with code restructuring, necessitating support from outsourced developers.

  • Our in-house designers were overwhelmed with marketing tasks and couldn't utilize Figma effectively for this project.

  • Selling to schools was challenging as they look for a comprehensive solution with quick result access, not just a tool for students.

Driving sales to schools and establishing our platform as a recognized solution

I began project planning with valuable input from the CEO and Tech Director, who suggested collaborating with outsourced developers and drafting the software requirements specification to bridge the gap between our in-house and outsourced teams. The design for the first phase focused on essential features to assist teachers in managing and tracking student and class performance.

Here's an article detailing our first phase.

Prototyping the Centralized Dashboard

We started with basic wireframes to map out the user journey and functionality, refining them based on feedback. Gradually, we transformed these sketches into high-fidelity prototypes, adding detailed designs and interactive elements. Our aim was to create a seamless experience for teachers, school admins, and managers, empowering them to efficiently manage and track student performance on the FLYER platform.

What I learned

What I learned

Throughout this project, working collaboratively with a team taught me invaluable lessons:

  • Teamwork simplifies tasks:

    • Collaboration significantly eased the workload. Recognizing the effectiveness of sharing responsibilities and delegating tasks enhanced productivity.

  • Agile methodology speeds progress:

    • Adopting an agile approach accelerated our pace, enabling quicker iterations and timely feedback incorporation.

  • Time management is crucial:

    • Project timelines dictate success. Balancing ambitious ideas with realistic deadlines ensures project feasibility and delivery.

  • Idea vs. Scope:

    • While ideas abound, project scope defines feasibility. Prioritizing features based on user needs and project constraints optimizes resource utilization.

  • The power of storytelling:

    • Incorporating a captivating narrative, like FLYER's game story, enhances user engagement and brand distinctiveness, paving the way for future growth.

  • Feedback fuels improvement:

    • Recognizing that design is iterative, embracing feedback fosters continuous improvement. Effective communication and active listening are key.

  • User-centric, Accessibility Design Matters:

    • Prioritizing user needs, especially those of non-tech-savvy users like parents and teachers, is paramount for product success and business growth.
